Eldorado Hills Thermography Frequently Asked Questions

Thermography offers peace of mind. Here are clear answers to the questions we hear most often.

Common Questions About Eldorado Hills Thermography

What is thermography?

Thermography, also called Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI), uses a highly sensitive infrared camera to measure and map heat on the surface of the body. Because inflammation, increased blood flow and nerve activity all change skin temperature, thermal images can reveal physiological patterns that may deserve further attention.

Is thermography safe?

Yes. The camera only receives the heat your body naturally gives off. There is no radiation, no compression, no injections and nothing touches your body, so thermography can be repeated as often as your healthcare provider recommends.

Does thermography replace a mammogram?

No. Thermography looks at physiology (heat and blood-flow patterns) while mammography looks at anatomy (structure). The two tests provide different information. Thermography is best used as an adjunct, alongside the screening plan you and your physician choose.

Who reads my images?

Your images are sent to board-certified medical doctors who specialize in interpreting thermal images. They prepare a written report that is returned to you, and you are encouraged to share it with your healthcare provider.

How long does an appointment take?

Plan on about 30 to 45 minutes for a breast study and up to about an hour for full body imaging. Part of that time is a short acclimation period that lets your skin temperature stabilize before the images are taken.

How do I prepare for my scan?

Avoid sun exposure, exercise, hot showers, saunas, massage, deodorants, lotions and smoking for the time periods listed on our procedure page. These all change skin temperature and can affect image quality.

How often should I have a breast thermography scan?

Most women establish a baseline with a first study and a follow-up about three months later. After a stable baseline is confirmed, annual imaging is typical unless the reading physician recommends a different interval.

Is thermography covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans do not cover thermography. Many clients use a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA). We provide a receipt you can submit for possible reimbursement.

Can men have thermography?

Yes. Full body, upper body, lower body, thyroid and maxillofacial imaging are available for men and women.

Can I have thermography if I have breast implants or am nursing?

Thermography can be performed with implants and is non-invasive for nursing mothers. Please mention implants, pregnancy, nursing or recent surgery when you book so we can schedule your study at the right time.

Thermography is an adjunctive screening tool. It is not a replacement for mammography or other diagnostic imaging recommended by your physician, and it does not diagnose cancer. Please continue to follow the screening guidance of your healthcare provider.
